American Music Awards are accolades that are awarded to American musicians for outstanding achievements in the music industry. The American Music Awards (AMAs) were created by Dick Clark so they could compete with the Grammys. The fist award show was in 1974 and was hosted by Michael Jackson, Donny Osmond, Rodney Allen Rippy and Ricky Segall. Unlike the Grammys which are decided on votes, the AMAs are determined by the poll of album sales. The AMAs are therefore a much true representation of what people think about the performances of American musicians. The AMAs moved to November so they could not clash with the time that the Grammys are held. Today the AMAs are determined by the sales of albums, airplay, activity on social networks and video views on the internet. The artist with the most awards is Michael Jackson who has a total of 26 awards with 24 as a solo artist. Michael Jackson also collected artist of the century. The most awards to a group were taken by Alabama who have a total of 23 awards. Whitney Houston has the most awards in the female category with 22 awards. The AMAs also polled some artists of the decade for each decade and these are as follows; 1950’s Elvis Presley, 1960’s The Beatles 1970’s Stevie Wonder 1980’s Michael Jackson 1990’s Garth Brooks, 2000’s Beyonce.
The AMAs are given to musicians according to how the public responds to their music. Nowadays there are social media networks such as Twitter and Facebook where fans can watch their favorite music videos. So if you want your favorite musician to win then you can contribute to their success by buying their albums and watching their videos online. Doing so will be the same as voting for them. You can’t expect your favorite musician to win an award when you only listen to their music on the radio and have never bought their album.
The internet has so much on offer from mp3’s that you can either download or listen to online. There are also some videos that you can play or download on the internet. When the time comes for the awards you can also watch them online as there will be many sites that will be having rights to the event. So you can choose to either watch the awards online or you could download them to watch on a device that can’t be connected to the net. There are those times when you are travelling and you don’t really have access to a television and yet you want to watch the AMAs. So you can use your mobile phone and watch 2011 AMA’s online.
